MIL-T-62518A
be conducted to evaluate workmanship and to determine conformance of structural members to contractual requirements.
4.3.2.1 Structural inspection. The vehicle shall be tested in accordance with 4.3.2.2 through
4.3.2.4 prior to painting. After the tests, dye penetrant or magnetic particle inspection shall be performed on the critical areas of the welds, again, prior to painting. A water soluble penetrant inspection shall be performed on all critical plastic areas. The water soluble penetrant or magnetic particle inspections shall provide means to detect crack indications under dynamic and static conditions.
* 4.3.2.2 Dynamic conditions. With two times the specified payload (see 3.6.5) on basket floor(s) or suspended from the basket(s), the upper and lower booms shall be extended through various positions, as deemed necessary by the Government inspector, and with the turntable
being rotated 360 degrees, for at least 1/2 hour, the water soluble penetrant and magnetic particle
inspection areas shall be inspected for any evidence of cracks. A visual inspection shall be performed on all critical fiberglass components. Any evidence of cracks or deformation or of damaged fiberglass material shall be cause for rejection of the vehicle.
4.3.2.3 Static conditions. With the lower boom in its most vertical position, and the upper boom horizontal, and with 2-2/3 times the specified load (see 3.6.5) placed in or suspended from the basket(s), water soluble penetrant and magnetic particle inspection areas shall be inspected for any evidence of cracks. The vehicle shall be secured against instability during the test with
2-2/3 times the load. A visual inspection shall be performed on all critical fiberglass components. Any evidence of cracks or deformation or of damaged fiberglass material shall be cause for rejection of the vehicle.
4.3.2.4 Critical areas. At least the following critical areas shall be inspected by dye penetrant or magnetic particles:
(a) Outriggers and attaching areas
(b) Turntable, pedestal, base, trunnion and yoke at attachment of lower boom and struts
(c) Lower boom at cylinder clevis brackets
(d) Lower boom sheaves, sheave supporting brackets, cable anchor and support brackets
(e) Lower boom at attachment to upper boom
(f) Upper boom sheaves, sheave supporting brackets, cable anchor and support brackets
(g) Structural steel of upper and lower boom
(h) Upper boom and yoke at attachment to basket(s) and side brackets.
