MIL-T-62518A
3.6.6.1 Operation. Smooth operation, with no lurching of the boom assembly, shall be possible. The controls shall be self-centering and shall revert to a neutral position when released by the operator. All boom and outrigger controls (see 3.6.7.1.1) shall be of the dead-man type operable with one hand but whereby two separate actions must be taken to actuate the control. The controls at the base of the lower boom shall be capable of overriding the controls on the aerial basket(s).
3.6.6.2 Instruments. Any switches, instruments and pressure gages on the lower control station shall be panel mounted, identified as to their function, and installed in a manner to facilitate removal and servicing. Gages and instruments shall be shockproof, waterproof, and weatherproof. Identification markings on corrosion-resistant plates shall be provided.
3.6.7 Stabilizing equipment.
3.6.7.1 Outriggers. Two hydraulically operated outriggers shall be provided if the actual maximum attainable floor to ground height of the basket is less than 9750 mm (32 feet) for
size 30 and less than 12 m (36.5 feet) for size 35 (class A vehicle may be provided with torsion bar stabilization in lieu of outriggers, provided it meets all the requirements of 3.3.3). Four
hydraulically operated outriggers shall be provided if the actual height is 12 m (36.5 feet) or greater or, for size 30, greater than 9750 mm (32 feet). Outriggers shall:
(a) enable leveling the vehicle on inclined surfaces and
(b) shall insure adequate stability with relation to the ground while operating the aerial platform under maximum loads.
Outrigger cylinder hydraulic fittings, lines, tubing, hoses, and pilot check valves shall be protected by metal guards, but shall be accessible for servicing. Outriggers shall be designed so that they may be extended over curbings and sidewalks.
* 3.6.7.1.1 Outrigger controls. An individual control for each outrigger shall be provided. Controls for the left outriggers shall be located at the rear left corner of the vehicle and controls for the right outriggers shall be located at the rear right corner of the vehicle. All outrigger controls shall be installed in a readily accessible location allowing operation from ground level. An automatic pilot check valve shall be provided for each outrigger to block the hydraulic fluid in the cylinder and to prevent movement of the outrigger in the event of a damaged hydraulic line. Interlocks shall be furnished to prevent the operation of the aerial boom assembly until the right and left side outriggers have properly descended. A self-actuating locking device shall prevent accidental raising of the outriggers while the aerial boom is elevated from stowage position. The interlocks shall not interfere with the operation of any hydraulic tool circuit. Each outrigger shall be provided with an automatic, positive, spring-actuated lock, or an automatic
