views, forming a smooth compound curved surface blending into the rectangular body
cross-section. The nose of the fairing shall project forward sufficiently to achieve a significant drag reduction at low yaw angles, and shall have a large enough radius to produce minimal flow separation at yaw angles of up to 20 degrees. In no case shall the forward portion of the fairing be less than 22 inches from the front face of the van body. The lower edge of the fairing shall be located as required to minimize drag due to turbulent airflow from the cab. The fairing construction material shall be molded fiberglass. Design operational limits shall include forward vehicle speeds of 60 mph during wind gusts of 60 mph from any direction.
3.5.5 Body interior. The complete interior of the body sides, top, back and front shall be insulated (see 3.5.5.1) and paneled. Inside paneling for sides, front, rear (including doors), and top shall be steel of not less than 22 gage (0.0299 inch) or 0.032 inch embossed aluminum. The van body shall be free from leakage when exposed to an overhead water spray test.
3.5.5.1 Insulation. Insulation shall provide resistance to the transfer of heat equivalent to the protection afforded by a l-inch thick batt having a thermal conductivity of 0.24 Btu/sq. ft./deg. F/hr./l-in. thickness in normal ambient air temperatures. Insulation shall be either flexible or batt type, fibrous or cellular material having a moisture absorption capacity of less than 2 percent by weight and shall be asbestos free. Materials shall be odorless and fire retardent. The insulation shall not breed nor promote the growth of fungus and shall not cause nor accelerate corrosion of steel, copper, or aluminum. The insulation shall be cemented to the inner side of external walls and provided with means to retain the insulation under all operating conditions. Cement shall be waterproof and the resulting bond shall provide shear strength sufficient to prevent a sag of the insulation when the assembled van is operated at speeds up to 55 mph over improved roads. All insulation, to a maximum practicable extent, shall be installed prior to the closing of spaces in
the body sides, front and rear panels, ends, doors, upright body members, roof, roof bows, and other parts.
3.5.6 Floorboards. The floorboards shall run the full length of the body except in those areas occupied by wheel plates. If wheel plates are furnished, wheel plates shall be flush with the
floor. Flooring shall be of hardwood or dense southern yellow pine not less than 1-1/8 inches
thick (finished dimension) with ship-lapped or tongue-in-groove joints, installed and bolted to the cross-sills. Two-piece boards shall be lap-jointed at a crossmember and bolted down. The key board shall be one-piece. Wood parts shall be treated in accordance with 3.1.1.4.
3.5.7 Windows. Each van body shall be equipped with eight windows (four on each side), excluding those placed in the rear doors. The windows shall be of the operating type. The bottoms of the eight window frames shall be not less than 40 inches from the floor. The window openings shall be framed between the exterior and interior panels with wood or metal to form a seal around the cutout for the window.
