platform shall be capable of supporting a 1,000-pound load distributed over any one square foot of area. With the elevating body retracted and resting on its subframe, the platform shall be supported by a structural installation located at the back of the vehicle cab, and the platform shall clear the vehicle cab roof by not less than 6 inches. When the body is being elevated, the body shall pick up the platform at the body floor level and raise it with the body, maintaining both
floor levels in the same plane. The threshold of the elevating body or the platform shall be provided with a means to prevent the feet of operating personnel in the elevating body from being engaged in the platform over the vehicle cab when the elevating body is ascending. Pads shall be provided for a hydraulic jack. Pads shall be capable of accepting the loads imposed. The jack shall raise the platform to enable servicing of the vehicle.
* 3.7.11.1 Platform bumper. A platform bumper shall be furnished on the front and the two sides of the platform. The bumpers shall be in accordance with MIL-B-4792, except the bumper shall be a single, hollow round section not less than 7-inches in outside diameter and not more than 5-1/8 inches in inside diameter. Means shall be provided to arrest the elevation of the body when the bumpers contact any external object and to lower the body until the contact is cleared. The force of the contact required shall not exceed 50 pounds.
3.7.11.2 Platform floor. The platform floor shall be one- or two-piece, aluminum safety tread plate not less than 1/4 inch thick, exclusive of tread height. Two-piece floor construction shall conform to 3.7.4.
* 3.7.11.3 Platform guard rails. Removable guard rails shall be furnished. The guard rails shall enclose the curbside, streetside, and front of the platform. (The front guard rail will be removed for loading and unloading.) The guard rails shall be constructed of aluminum structural members and shall be not less than 42 inches in height, measured from the floor to the top of the guard rails. The side guard rails shall be secured to the body and to the floor with quick-clamp type fasteners, and shall be capable of being removed without the use of tools. The front guard rail shall be secured to the side guard rails with quick-clamp type fasteners and shall be capable
of being removed without the use of tools. Hangers shall be provided in the body for stowage of the guard rails. Stowage provisions shall include means of clamping the guard rails down when not in use.
3.7.12 Rear step bumper. A spring loaded rear bumper shall be furnished. A safety tread step, integrated with the rear bumper, shall be provided at the rear of the body to assist personnel in entering the body interior when the body is in the lowered position. The step shall extend across the full width of the body and shall be not less than 10 inches deep.
3.8 Welding. Adequate preparation of metal prior to welding of the body subframe, hoist, elevating body, and components shall be provided. The surface of parts to be welded shall be free of rust, scale, paint, grease, and other foreign matter. Welding rods shall be compatible with
