MIL-T-62145E
* 3.6.9 Tailgate. Unless a hydraulic tailgate is specified (see 3.6.10), a tailgate conforming to the following shall be provided. The tailgate shall be of aluminum. The tailgate shall be transversely centered and its width shall be the same as the body loadspace. The height of the tailgate in the travel position shall be not less than 40 inches measured from the centerline of the tailgate hinge pivot point. The tailgate shall be hinged at the bottom and supported with
duck-covered, corrosion-resistant stay chains on each side of the tailgate. The top or the surface facing the loadspace shall have a non-skid tread surface. The tailgate shall be of the ramping type, tapering down to 3/8 inch plus 1/4 inch minus 0 thickness at the aircraft floor level, starting approximately 9 inches from the edge. The bottom side of the ramp shall have a smooth bearing surface to prevent damage to aircraft floors. The tailgate shall be capable of withstanding a
5,000 pound load, with the tailgate in a horizontal position and supported by its hinges and the
stay chains. The tailgate shall be capable of being placed and secured in the vertical downward, horizontal, and vertical up positions. Rubber guards shall be furnished on the tailgate at those points which may come into contact with a loading dock when the tailgate is completely up, extended horizontally, or hanging downward.
* 3.6.10 Hydraulic tailgate. When specified (see 6.2), a hydraulically powered, hinged tailgate shall be furnished. The height of the tailgate shall be not less than 42 inches measured from the body floor and the width shall be not less than the width of the body loadspace. The tailgate
shall be hinged at the bottom. The tailgate shall be provided with duck-covered corrosion- resistant safety chains on each side of the tailgate, for support in the horizontal position. The hydraulic system shall be a constant pressure hydraulic system to provide power to raise the tailgate to the vertical up position and to lower the tailgate to the horizontal position or vertical down position in smooth operations. Means shall be provided to secure the tailgate in the vertical plane up, in the horizontal plane and in the vertical plane down. The tailgate surface which faces the loadspace shall have a non-skid tread surface. The bottom side of the tailgate shall have a smooth bearing surface to prevent damage to aircraft floors. Rubber guards shall be furnished on the tailgate at those points which may come in contact with a loading dock with the tailgate either vertical or horizontal. The tailgate shall be of the ramping type, tapering down to
3/8 inch plus 1/4 minus 0 thickness at the aircraft floor level, starting approximately 9 inches from the edge, to facilitate loading and unloading with wheeled loaders and handlers. When the tailgate is in the loading (horizontal) position, the clearance between the rear edge of the vehicle and the tailgate shall be not more than 3/4 inch. The tailgate shall be capable of withstanding a load of 5,000 pounds with the tailgate in the horizontal position and supported by its hinges, the hydraulic system and the safety chains. The tailgate shall be capable of being held in either the vertical or horizontal position when the vehicle is traveling. The hydraulic cylinders shall be provided with flow restrictors in the downport of the cylinders to prevent the tailgate from falling in the event of hydraulic system failure. Controls shall be mounted near the tailgate to facilitate operation from the ground and from the body with the body in the elevated position. An
