gasoline), a selector valve connecting either tank to the engine fuel intake shall be provided and means shall be provided to monitor the fuel level of either tank from a single gage; or an equalizing pump shall be used to maintain the same fuel level in both tanks. Except for class 10 wreckers, fuel tanks shall not extend beyond the rear of the cab.
* 3.4.3.3 Fuel and water separator. The manufacturer's standard or optional fuel filter shall be provided. When specified (see 6.2), a fuel and water separator shall be furnished. The separator shall include a water coalescer and a drain valve. When a separator is required, a combination filter/separator unit may be furnished.
3.4.4 Exhaust system. The exhaust system shall conform to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation 393.83. Vertical exhaust mufflers, if furnished and if capable of being reached easily by personnel entering or leaving either side of the cab, shall be furnished with a heat shield. Vertical exhaust systems, if furnished, shall be provided with a hinged rain cap.
* 3.4.4.1 Spark arresting muffler. When specified (see 6.2), a spark arresting muffler shall be furnished, and shall have an 80 percent arresting efficiency when rated in accordance with
SAE J350.
3.4.4.2 Exhaust system safety shield. The exhaust system or hydraulic system shall be
shielded so that, in the event of any hydraulic line rupture or any hydraulic fluid leak, the hydraulic fluid will not come into contact with any part of the vehicle exhaust system that is to the rear of
the cab.
3.4.5 Gear train.
* 3.4.5.1 Transmission. Unless otherwise specified (see 3.4.5.3), a manually shifted transmission shall be provided. The input torque capacity of the transmission shall be at least equal to the maximum torque delivered by the engine. Gear ratios in transmission and axles shall be matched to provide a progressive shifting pattern throughout the complete range, and shall provide required vehicle performance (see 3.3 through 3.3.1.3). The transmission shall be provided with power takeoff opening(s) conforming to SAE J704. The transmission shall provide
for maximum ease of shifting in all speeds, and the net torque capacity and the net power rating of the transmission shall exceed the output ratings of the engine. The transmission shall be the manufacturer's standard design with not less than the number of vehicle forward speeds specified in table IX for the corresponding vehicle class. A multispeed transmission or an auxiliary transmission shall be provided. Auxiliary transmissions shall be of the air shift type.
